When you are in need of cash, do you usually head to the first ATM you see? If the ATM you use is out or your bank’s network, you likely have to pay a fee. According to a Bankrate.com survey, the average ATM fee per transaction is $4.35! Now, that may not seem like much, but if you take cash out regularly this can add up to hundreds of dollars per year!
Don’t let your money go to waste, use these three simple tactics to avoid paying an ATM fee ever again.
Know where the closest ATMs or branches for your bank are. Most bank’s mobile apps have a feature that lets you look at nearby ATMs or branches. Even if you think there aren’t any conveniently close, you may be surprised. Convenience stores, liquor stores and other places in your area may have an ATM for your bank.
Get cash back when you shop. Many stores, including grocery stores, offer cash back when you make a purchase. If you know you will need cash soon, ask for some cash back the next time you do your grocery shopping.
Use an online bank. Online banks like Ally, which does not have any physical locations and therefore does not have its own ATMs, will not charge you any fees for using another bank’s ATM. They will even reimburse you for any ATM fees you may procure. If you are the type who frequently uses an ATM but rarely remember to use your bank’s type, this is a great option for you.
Spend your money on things you need and want, not on ATM fees!
